Cedar Hammock, Whitfield fire merger OK'd:
Voters in central and south Manatee on Tuesday approved a ballot question proposing the merger of the Whitfield and Cedar Hammock fire districts.
Here's what the Bradenton Herald had to say about the merger...

"In the only referendum issue on the ballot, voters in Cedar Hammock and Whitfield wisely approved merger of their two fire districts. The approval, which must be formalized by a special act of the Legislature, will assure Whitfield residents of quality fire protection without the expense of building a full-time professional department from scratch. The volunteer status is no longer adequate for the relatively small district as aging volunteers decide not to take the extensive training required by new state firefighting standards. The merger brings Whitfield under the larger, professional Cedar Hammock umbrella and enhances that district's economy of scale and the coverage of its southern border."
